MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Some people dream of flying, but Millsaps track & field long jumper
Christopher Butler actually did during Day One of the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Track and Field Championships on Friday.
Butler set a school record in the event and recorded the second-longest distance in conference history with a bound of 7.07 meters (23 feet-2.50 inches). Only Jeremy Phillips of Rhodes has leapt farther (7.14m, 2014).
In the team competition the men currently hold fourth position after tallying 29 points, while the women totaled six points for seventh place.
Several other Majors turned in stellar performances to open the two-day meet along with Butler.
Fellow sophomore
Landry Lemoine cruised to a 10,000-meter time of 33:25.27 to finish seventh in the meet and become the second-fastest Major in program history at the distance.
Senior
Samuel Saia posted a swift time of 9:52.55 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, which placed him third in the conference and just under two seconds off the school mark.
Sophomore
William Weber and junior
Chris Shead both scored points for the Majors as well in their respective field events. Weber placed second in the pole vault at 3.94m (12 feet-11 inches), while Shead threw the men's hammer the sixth-furthest distance at 36.44m (119 feet-7 inches).
In preliminary competition, senior

Classmate
