JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps men and women's tennis programs are set to embark on an exciting and competitive season following several team firsts in 2021. Headed by the highly decorated coaching veteran and first-year head coach
Agnes Gee, both squads are poised for success in the spring.
On the women's team, the Majors are looking to continue their recent success from last spring where they earned their first-ever SAA regular season and postseason titles. Millsaps finished with an 11-4 overall record and an unblemished 6-0 mark in league play.
The squad, who reached the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament, also received national honors as they reached their highest Oracle ITA ranking in program history at No. 31. After sweeping the SAA postseason awards in SAA Coach of the Year, SAA Player of the Year and SAA Newcomer of the Year, women's tennis truly rewrote the program record books.
With seven returners from the historic season, six of the women had .500-or-better records in singles competition while all eight had .500 or better records in doubles action. Highlighting the returners will be reigning SAA Newcomer of the Year
Camille Fremaux along with
Marissa Brown and
Morris Kelly Clayton.
Fremaux posted impressive records of 7-0 in singles and 10-1 in doubles in Spring 2020. She was also half of a duo that reached a No. 10 final Atlantic South Regional ranking. Her and 2021 graduate
Grace Gaskins dominated Court 1, posting a 10-1 mark throughout the season. Adding to her accolades, Fremaux was dubbed SAA Singles Player of the Week on April 6 and a part of the SAA Doubles Player of the Week on April 13.
Brown was apart of the number one doubles team in the SAA record wise (8-1) in 2021. She teamed up with graduate
Ella Shields, appearing in the NCAA a season ago, Brown and Shields also garnered SAA Doubles Team of the Week honors. Capping off the highlighted returners is Clayton who finished 9-1 in doubles.
On the men's side, the Majors will be returning four starters from a year ago. Leading the charge will be
John Kimball,
Hamilton Jackson,
Jakub Bobinski and
Trevor Vaccaro.
Kimball, a senior from Germantown, Tenn., was a member of the All-SAA Second Team a year ago. He competed in a team-high 17 singles and doubles matches last season and was tied for first in doubles victories with six wins.
Jackson, a junior from Memphis, Tenn., won three matches in both singles and doubles. Bobinski, hailing from Warsaw, Poland, also claimed three doubles victories and added two triumphs in singles. Rounding out the returning four is junior
Trevor Vaccaro. The Southlake, Texas native earned four wins across Court 1-5 and secured three doubles wins.
As a coach, Gee has been a fixture in the area. Beginning in 2001, she was a freelance tennis professional in Oxford and Tupelo, Miss. From 2002 through 2011, she became an assistant tennis professional at the River Hills Club of Jackson.
Gee then worked as the head tennis pro for the Racquet Club at Cypress Lake (2011-14) as well as the Ridgeland Tennis Center (2014-16). She most recently spent the previous five years returning to teach and organize events at the River Hills Club once more in Jackson.
Gee attended the University of Mississippi from 1996-2001 where she became one of the most decorated student-athletes in program history. She powered the Rebels to their first-ever SEC Tournament Championship, an NCAA Quarterfinal berth and final national ranking of No. 6 in 1999. Ole Miss also reached the national team quarterfinals in 1998 thanks in large part to Gee.
