JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps football program finished the regular season by recognizing 11 senior student-athletes as well as four cheerleaders and a football staff member at Harper Davis Field on Saturday. The Majors were bested 42-13 by Southwestern University.
Seniors on the gridiron recognized were
D.B. Bennett,
James Christy,
Zack Clark,
Nick Dotson,
Jaidon Horton,
Logan Krueger,
Peyton Leingang,
Temias Mason,
Anthony Mayfield,
Conner Rucker and
Adrian Turner for their tremendous hard work on and off the field. Millsaps also honored football student assistant
Grayson Hewitt as well as cheerleaders
Riley Bennett,
Breydon Conner,
Hannah Henderson and
Kennedy Nicholas.
The Majors outscored the Pirates, 10-0 in the first quarter, but the Pirates would tally six touchdowns combined in the second and third quarters to record the final 42-13 score.
Millsaps tallied 21 first downs compared to 17 by the Pirates. The Majors out passed Southwestern, 269-170 yards, but the visitors out rushed the home team by 163 yards. Southwestern also held an 8-2 takeaway advantage.
Rising freshman
Gray Jennings completed 20-of-38 passes, throwing for 269 yards and one touchdown. The Pirate defense combined for four interceptions. Bennett hauled in the touchdown pass in the opening quarter.
Mason totaled four receptions for 75 yards through the air and used three kick returns to post 82 yards in special teams yardage. Sophomore
Joshua Richardson rushed for 69 yards on 12 attempts and added three receptions for 46 yards.
Junior
Connor Ladner added 39 receiving yards, Rucker tallied 37 yards and sophomore
Brandyn Butler finished with 35 yards in the pass game.
Defensively, freshman
James Jones totaled four tackles (0.5 TFLs), hauled in an interception, forced a fumble and returned it 24 yards. Freshman
Luke Bridges recorded a team-high six tackles, while sophomore
Ashton Coffelt registered five tackles (1 TFL) and a breakup.
Junior
Ethan Klapatch, fresh off his third D3football.com Team of the Week nod, totaled 190 yards on three kickoffs (63.3-yard average). He also netted four punts for 183 yards with a long of 53 yards (45.8-yard average).
Rising freshman
EJ Escarfullet kicked two field goals of 19 yards and a season-best 40-yarder.
Jones hauled in his first career interception on the game's opening play. Escarfullet would put the Majors on the board first with his 19-yard, field-goal conversion.
Millsaps would continue building the lead as Jennings found Mason for 47 yards and later Bennett on a 13-yard touchdown connection five minutes in.
The second quarter saw the Pirates find the end zone on five of six possessions to build a 35-10 advantage at intermission.
Southwestern added a score in the third quarter before Escarfullet would connect on his 40-yard field-goal attempt with two minutes remaining for the final points in the season finale.
