Discipline, Respect, Handling Adversity: 2023 Football Season Preview

Majors Look to Improve with New Mindset and Core Principles in the Fall

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps football program is back with a fresh mindset and three core principles, heading into the 2023 campaign. Interim head football coach Corey York will be entering his first season at the helm after four seasons as a Millsaps assistant. York is instilling a message of discipline, earning respect through play on the field and handling adversity.

The Majors are also following three core principles this season: bringing their best every day, expecting to win through preparation and never giving up. York replaces four staff members with Jared Burton (offensive coordinator), Christopher Royal (defensive coordinator), Marcus Haynes (secondary coach) and Ty Nix (defensive line coach/academic coordinator).

Offensively the Majors will be returning key veterans under center, at tight end and at wide receiver. Junior quarterback Brody Davis will be darting the ball after tallying 1,622 passing yards, 105 rushing yards and 12 total touchdowns in eight games in 2022.

Senior tight end D.B. Bennett, the 2023 Juan Joseph Memorial Award honoree, is returning after back-to-back All-SAA Honorable Mention nods. Look for senior wideouts Temias Mason and Conner Rucker along with junior Connor Ladner to haul in several additional catches this year. Sophomore and Arkansas State transfer Blake Wiley has also impressed in fall camp.

The running back core will be improved with depth and experience, with sophomores Joshua Richardson and Jordan Osborn expected to carry most of the load. Richardson is an explosive athlete, converting from defensive back.

From left to right, the projected offensive line starters are sophomore left tackle Larry Francois III, junior left guard Preston Hill, freshman center Erik Contreras, sophomore right guard Skyler Shank and junior right tackle Peyton Parker.

On the defensive side, look for junior Darren Labit to patrol the deep passes at free safety. Sophomore linebacker Nehemiah Coalson is back after finishing second on the team with 63 total tackles, first with 7.5 tackles for loss and tied for first with three sacks. Junior defensive tackle Nicholas Eaton accumulated 25 tackles last fall and sophomore end Braylon Wills recorded 36 tackles, three sacks and forced a fumble.

Also anticipate sophomore linebacker Donald Turley to make an impact after transferring from Jackson State. Other probable starters include senior end Peyton Leingang, senior end Adrian Turner, senior nose guard James Christy, junior defensive tackle Nicholas Eaton, freshman linebacker James Jones, senior left corner Anthony Mayfield, sophomore right corner Tondarrius Stallion and freshman strong safety Reed Hopkins.

Sophomore Brandyn Butler along with Stallion should rack up yards as returners. Junior punter Ethan Klapatch, a two-time member of the All-SAA Honorable Mention Defensive team, should also be key in the battle for field position. Freshman EJ Escarfullet is listed as the primary place kicker entering the first contest.

Millsaps will begin the 2023 season in the Riverside Rumble at Belhaven on Thursday, Aug. 31. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. with live stats and video available at gomajors.com.

Season tickets are also on sale featuring five home games. Chair-back tickets are available at $250 and a general admission pass will cost $40.
