SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The Millsaps College football team took an early lead, but were unable to keep up with No. 17 Trinity University, falling 42-24 on Saturday at Trinity Stadium. The Majors opened the scoring with a touchdown in the first quarter and added 14 points in the fourth quarter, highlighted by a 35-yard rushing touchdown. Despite Millsaps converting all three red zone attempts, the Tigers maintained control with 509 total offensive yards and successfully scored on all five of their red zone opportunities.
Millsaps (5-4, 3-3 SAA) was led offensively by redshirt sophomore
Braxton Garmon, who contributed with a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown, accumulating 47 rushing yards on 13 attempts and 32 receiving yards on two catches.
Freshman
Grant Bizjack completed 16 of 27 passes for 196 yards and one touchdown while also rushing for a career-best 110 yards on 16 carries. Junior
Tameron Patterson added 51 rushing yards on 10 attempts, including a rushing tally. Sophomore
Greg Donaldson hauled in six catches for a team-high 72 yards.
On the defensive side, freshman
Peyton Depolitte led the Majors with 11 total tackles. Classmate
Jackson DeGeorge (eight tackles) and sophomore
Justin Smith (seven tackles) both added a quarterback hurry. Junior
Christian McCoy also posted five tackles, forced a fumble and provided a breakup of his own.
Sophomore
Connor Babin successfully converted all three of his PAT attempts and made a field goal from 44 yards. He added five kickoffs totaling 320 yards (64.0-yard average).
The Tigers entered ranked No. 17 in the NCAA National Power Index (NPI) rankings and improved to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in conference competition.
Millsaps established early momentum in the first quarter with a strong defensive play, highlighted by McCoy forcing a fumble, which was recovered by freshman
Keiron Ross. This turnover set up the Majors' second drive, where Bizjack connected with Garmon for a 23-yard touchdown pass. Babin's successful extra point attempt put the Majors ahead 7-0.
On the defensive side, the Majors successfully halted the Tigers on several drives, including a fourth-down sack by senior
Zabian Boutan, which resulted in a turnover on downs. Millsaps maintained their 7-0 lead as the quarter concluded.
The second quarter commenced with a challenging sequence for the Majors, highlighted by a blocked punt. The Tigers capitalized with a touchdown and extra point tying the game. Trinity followed with a 45-yard rushing score on their next possession to build a 14-7 advantage.
Millsaps responded with a promising drive as Babin managed to put three points on the board with a 44-yard field goal, narrowing the deficit.
The Majors' defense faced pressure yet prevented further scoring until late in the quarter. With under a minute remaining, the Tigers completed a 5-yard touchdown pass, further widening the margin. The quarter concluded with Millsaps trailing 21-10, as the home team carried momentum into halftime.
The third quarter began with Millsaps attempting to regain control as Bizjack led a drive that included a key third-down conversions with a 10-yard rush and later a 7-yard pass to junior
Taj Colom II. However, the drive was halted by a fumble recovered by the Tigers at their own 28-yard line, shifting control back to the home team.
Trinity capitalized on the turnover, advancing down the field and scoring a touchdown on a 10-yard rush, extending their lead to 28-10. Millsaps' subsequent possession saw Patterson make a notable 16-yard run, but a blocked punt by the Tigers disrupted their progress, setting up another scoring opportunity for the home team.
The Tigers concluded the quarter with another successful drive, capped by a 1-yard touchdown run that started from the Millsaps 35-yard line.
The fourth quarter began with the Tigers capitalizing on further short field position following a Millsaps punt. The Tigers advanced the ball, culminating in a 3-yard touchdown run, increasing their lead to 42-10.
Millsaps responded with a determined drive led by Bizjack, who completed key passes and rushed for significant yardage, including a 35-yard gain. Patterson capped the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run.
Millsaps continued to show resilience, with Garmon breaking free for a 31-yard touchdown run, reducing the deficit to 42-24 on the following drive. Despite this surge, the clock worked against Millsaps as the Tigers maintained control, running down the time and securing the victory. The game concluded with the Tigers winning, 42-24.
The next challenge for the Majors is set for Saturday, Nov. 15, when they will host Sewanee at Harper Davis Field in Jackson, Mississippi, with the game kicking off at 1 p.m. Senior Day festivities will take place prior to the start of the game with live video and live stats available at gomajors.com.
