JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps men's and women's track and field competed well at the Belhaven Invitational on Saturday. Several set personal bests and made collegiate debuts in events, while five Majors matched or etched their names in the programs' top-five lists.
Senior
Fran Edwards made a remarkable impact at the Belhaven Track and Field Complex by becoming the third-fastest runner in program history in the 5000 meters. The Little Rock, Ark., native secured first place in the event with a time of 18 minutes, 59.23 seconds.
Edwards also secured eighth position in the 1500 meters (5:22.02), where she set a personal record.
Finishing closely in front of Edwards in the 1500 was classmate Sarah Strickland. The Spanish Fort, Ala., product held the seventh spot with a time of 5:20.85. She also garnered third-place recognition in the women's 5000 meters (21:07.57) to display her distance prowess.
Junior Eleanor Scott, not shy of setting records herself, leapt the third furthest in program history in the women's triple jump (10.47 meters) to finish second at the Belhaven Invitational.
Scott also tied her personal best in the high jump (1.55m) to place fourth in the event on Saturday.
The women's squad continued to excel for the Majors as freshman Merritt Johnson became the fourth-place holder in the record book in the 100-meter hurdles, earning ninth (19.54 seconds) to gain recognition.
Other strong throwers included sophomores Amari Jackson-Wright and Amelia Bohl.
Jackson-Wright became the fourth-best shot putter for the Majors, claiming 11th at 10.02 meters. Bohl secured ninth in the discus with a personal-best toss (31.69m), while Jackson-Wright was 14th in the event (28.02m).
Freshman Molly Northam, competing in her first collegiate meet, took fifth in the javelin throw (23.56m).
Sophomore Fiona Selders (8th, 27.22) and freshman
Suzanna Busbee (16th, 28.44) both set personal bests in the 200 meters on Saturday.
The pair competed well alongside sophomore Hannah Brown in the 100-meter dash. Selders was 10th (13.12), Brown 11th (13.12) and Busbee 21st (personal best, 13.89).
Selders also was 22nd in the 400 meters (1:06.65).
On the men's side, sophomore Justin Smith ran a swift 51.82 in the 400 meters for 11th place.
Making their collegiate debuts in the 100-meter dash were freshmen Ian Burleson and W.H. Carver. Burleson ran a 11.97 (22nd), while Carver crossed the line in 12.19 (26th).
Graduate Bryan Sullivan earned sixth in the javelin. He set a personal-best flight of 44.39 meters.
Senior AJ Alvarez competed in three events with his best being the shot put. He grabbed 15th at 9.53 meters.
The Majors will next compete at the Rhodes 7-Way Meet in Memphis, Tenn., on Saturday, April 12.
