HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Millsaps men's and women's track and field programs concluded their weekend by setting a dozen personal bests and earning spots in the school record book following an exciting performance at the Southern Miss Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the Marshall Bell Track Complex.
On the men's side, freshman Benjamin Sylve became the fourth-fastest runner in Millsaps program history in the 800 meters.
The Canton, Miss., native crossed the finish line seventh with a time of 2:00.23 at the Southern Miss Invitational, demonstrating focus and readiness to compete.
Classmate Sean Wyers claimed his spot as the second-farthest thrower in program history, finishing 12th in the men's discus with a throw of 42.44 meters to conclude his stay in Hattiesburg.
Wyers also competed in the hammer throw, finishing 18th with a mark of 33.30 m, and in the shot put, placing 18th with a throw of 11.46 m.
At the invitational, freshman Dallas Stricker made an impact for the Majors, finishing ninth in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:15.77.
Freshman Jacari Watson led the Majors in the shot put event, closing out in 17th place with a throw of 11.61 m.
Classmate Luke LeFors recorded personal-best times in both the 200 meters (47th, 23.13) and the 400 meters (37th, 51.98).
Sophomore Aidan Brice pushed himself against strong competition on the track, achieving personal bests in both the 100 meters (50th, 11.31) and the 200 meters (52nd, 23.34).
In the men's discus, freshman Michael Cosgriff (17th, 37.35 m) and sophomore Dillon Duley (19th, 34.66 m) both set personal bests in the event.
Continuing the men's strong showing, freshman Frederick Fluker Jr. set the pace in the 110-meter hurdles, clocking in at 16.59 seconds.
Junior Carter Davis, steadily improving his skills throughout the season, set a personal best in the men's javelin throw with a distance of 25.71 m, finishing in 19th place.
Freshman Wyatt Wheeler placed among the top 25 in the long jump with a mark of 5.70 meters to finish out his day.
Competing against NCAA divisions, alongside NAIA and NJCAA institutions, Brice, Wheeler, Fluker, and sophomore W.H. Carver displayed determination in the 4x100m relay, where they ended the track event in 10th place (44.65), accomplishing a season-best cap off their road trip in Hattiesburg.
The men's team delivered some of their best performances at the invitational and will look to continue building their confidence in every aspect.
On the women's team, Millsaps put on a show, with sophomore Claudia Dempsey putting on a solid performance at the Southern Miss Invitational.
The Piedmont, Ala., native finished third in the women's 3000m steeplechase with a time of 14:04.68, making a strong impression at the invitation.
In the triple jump, senior Eleanor Scott claimed fourth place with a leap of 11.01 m, showcasing her skill.
Sophomore Molly Northam secured ninth place in the javelin throw with a mark of 26.67 m.
Junior Fiona Selders boasted 16th place out of 41 competitors in the 100 meters (12.40), where she tied a personal best and became second in program history.
Selders closed out her event in the Hub City on a high note, placing 15th in the 200 meters with a time of 25.81 seconds.
In the women's discus, junior Amari Jackson-Wright managed the day well, finishing 17th with a throw of 30.31m in the field event.
Jackson-Wright also competed in the shot put, placing 19th with a launch of 10.34 m.
In the same event, classmate Reese Brasseaux (22nd, 26.49 m) and Day (24th, 21.69 m) both set personal bests.
Junior Amelia Bohl led the Majors in the hammer throw, finishing 18th with a distance of 36.26 m.
The women's team wrapped up the Southern Miss Invitational on a high note, showcasing their competitiveness against top programs throughout the weekend.
The Majors will close out their regular season at the Rhodes 7-Way Meet on Saturday, April 11, in Memphis, Tenn.
