In 1935 was drafted into the Detroit Tigers farm system, and later signed with the Chicago Cubs in 1939
In 1945 led the Chicago Cubs to the World Series where he pitched a one-hit shutout in Game 3
In 13 years in the majors compiled a record of 162-150 with a career ERA of 3.32 and 188 completed games
Played in the Major League Baseball All-Star Game six times during his career
Member of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame
