Box Score MEMPHIS- The Millsaps Majors dropped a tough five-set match with the Rhodes Lynx, falling 15-13 in the fifth set on Sunday.
Lexus Andrews and Caroline McKey each had 16 kills to lead the Majors' offense in the loss. Taylor Ziegler had 20 assists to lead the way and was one of four Majors with double digit digs.
Rhodes got off to a red-hot start, building a 16-6 first set led enroute to a 25-15 first set win. The Majors made eight errors in the first set to help spark an early Rhodes' run that put the Majors down early.
The Majors responded nicely, using a McKey service run to build a 14-7 lead. Mary Wilson had a nice service run of her own and kills by Olivia Kleyer and Andrews helped ice the set for the Majors at 25-21 to tie up the match.
Back-and-forth third and fourth sets were split between the two squads. The third set was tied at 23 before a service ace and a kill by the Lynx tipped the scales and the set in their favor. In the fourth, Andrews and McKey had service runs as the Majors held a lead for most of the set. After a brief Lynx run brought it to 20-19, Taylor Ziegler got a hot service hand and tied the match at 2-2 with a five-point run.
The fifth set was everything you could want out of a winner-take-all scenario. The teams traded points throughout the set that saw eight ties. A pair of kills by the Lynx proved to be the difference as they won the final two points, and the match.
The loss drops the Majors to 11-11 and 4-5 in conference play.
In the second game of the Rhodes' Classic for the Majors, Millsaps fell 15-12 in the fifth set to the Muhlenberg Mules.
Andrews led the way with 16 kills and 24 digs while Mary Wilson led with 21 assists. Each of the five sets were nip-and-tuck. The Majors won the first set 25-23 after kills by Ziegler and McKey broke a 23-23 tie.
The second set saw the Mules jump out to a 17-10 lead only to see the Majors storm back to tie the set at 20. Aces by Wilson and Ziegler helped with the comeback. The Mules were able to regroup and won five of the next seven points to take set two, 25-22. Set three saw the Mules pull away once again, using a coulple of attack errors by the Majors and two kills of their own to break a late set tie and win 25-18 to take a 2-1 lead.
The Majors rallied and consistently held a fourth set lead. A late Mules' run tied the match at 23 but a kill from Susannah Williams and a win off of Christina Tilton's serve sent the match to a fifth set.
Much like the fifth set versus Rhodes, this one saw six ties as the teams went back and forth. The Mules put together a crucial three-point run to break a 11-11 tie and set up match point. The Majors fought off the first with a McKey kill but the Mules proved too much and won 15-12 in the fifth.
The Majors will look to get back to 500 overall and in conference when Birmingham Southern come to Jackson for a Wednesday conference match.
