Box Score Jackson, MS – The Millsaps men's soccer team completed another comeback win by scoring three unanswered goals against Sewanee earlier tonight.
Intense, heart stopping, and hard-fought are a few words that could describe the ninth win of the season for the Majors, but simply put, the victory was absolutely earned. Improving to a record of 9-4 (3-2) on the year, the Majors finished off another come from behind win in front of a record home crowd.
The Majors returned home after a series of four straight road games for the month of Oct. Tonight's comeback win continued a familiar theme for Millsaps, as this win marks their third come from behind victory of 2015. Facing a 2-0 deficit, the Majors never panicked by scoring three unanswered goals to win 3-2.
Sewanee began the scoring on the night in the first ten minutes of play. Max Hawes, who leads the Tigers in goals scored, rocketed a perfectly placed shot from 35 yards out to give Sewanee an early 1-0 lead.
Three minutes later, Luke Deimer attempted to score on a near-post cross from the corner on the field. Deimer's shot deflected off a Major defender and careened into the back of the net. The 'own goal' put the Majors in an early 2-0 hole just 10 minutes into the game.
Friday's contest featured multiple fouls and cautions throughout the night. Eventually, one led to a Majors scoring chance with 10 minutes left in the first half of play. Nat Edwards launched a left-footed free kick to the back post just inside Sewanee's 18-yard box. From there, the Staursky brothers took over.
Daniel Staursky finished a deflected header from Dimitri Staursky to cut the Sewanee lead in half. Staursky's late goal closed out the first period of play with some welcomed positive momentum for Millsaps.
Using the momentum to their advantage, the Majors began the second half with an intense amount of offensive pressure. The heavy pressure led to a long cross deep into Sewanee territory from Lukas Elmhammar. Dimitri Staursky again finished off a long pass by heading in Elmhammar's well placed cross to tie the game 2-2.
Just fifteen minutes following Staursky's equalizer, Nat Edwards passed to Nico Roth in front of the Sewanee goal. Roth launched his shot into the back of the net, giving the Majors their first lead of the night.
The first lead of the night would be the only one Millsaps needed, as Roth's goal finished off the tenacious come from behind effort.
"Extremely proud of our team effort tonight in earning another come from behind win," Head Men's Soccer Coach Steve Voltz said. "Sewanee is a great team, I'm proud of our guys fighting hard to get a big conference win."
The loss drops Sewanee to 5-9-1 (1-4) on the year, as tonight's contest begins a pair of weekend games for the Majors.
Next up for Millsaps is another home conference game as Centre travels to Harper Davis Field for a 2 pm start. Senior Day, Sunday, Oct. 18th will be the final regular season home game for the Majors as well.
