Great Effort Leads to Majors Fifth Straight Win

Box Score

Jackson, MS – The Majors men's soccer team closed out Saturday's slate of Family Weekend games by defeating Covenant College 3-0.

The win marks the fifth straight of the season for the Majors and third straight at Harper Davis Field.  Covenant, who earned an NCAA Tournament bid by winning the USA South Tournament last season, falls to 1-5 on the year.

Last season the two teams met for a game played at Covenant, which handed the Majors their first loss of 2014.  Wanting to continue their solid play at home, Millsaps began the night with a great deal of offensive pressure.

Sophomore midfielder, Alex Bourland drew a foul just 13 minutes into the game by storming into the 18-yard box of Covenant.  The foul resulted in an early penalty kick for Millsaps.

Senior forward, Nico Roth rocketed the penalty shot into the back of the net, giving the Majors an early 1-0 lead.

Roth's goal on the penalty kick was the only score of the first half, as the Majors outshot the Scots of Covenant 8-3 in the first period of play.

Entering the second half, the Majors wanted to create more offensive chances on the offensive pressure they kept applying all night.  Due in large part to a team effort, the Majors were able to score just eight minutes into the second half of play.

Nico Roth and Alex Bourland orchestrated a beautiful string of passes that drew Covenant starting goalkeeper Daniel Kubin off his line.  As a result, junior midfielder Steven Chrobok was left open just inside the 18-yard box.  Chrobok launched the pass from Bourland into the back of the net, giving the Majors a 2-0 lead.

Chrobok's goal set the tone for the second half, as the Majors team effort presented more scoring opportunities against Covenant.

The heavy pressure coupled with the great team effort by the Majors led to another second half goal.  This time Alex Bourland found the back of the net on a couple of well-timed passes from Nico Roth and sophomore John Overton.

The third and final goal of the night capped off a solid team performance by the Majors, as they were able to orchestrate scoring chances due to strong defensive play and efficient team passing.

"Good response for us tonight after a subpar couple of games last weekend," Head Coach Steve Voltz said.  "I'm proud of the team effort, some of the goals we scored were due to a great combination of team passes."

Covenant, an NCAA Tournament team last season, presented a great challenge for the Majors defense.  Led by starting goalkeeper Johnathan Huebbe, the Majors defense held strong to earn the shutout.

"Our whole defensive group was solid tonight, especially Daniel StaurskyTaylor HayesNat Edwards, and Gregory Hurley," Coach Voltz said.  "Overall, tonight shows what we are capable of when we play with a collective team effort."

The Majors continue their series of home games next weekend where they'll begin conference play against Birmingham Southern.

"Tonight provides a great confidence boost for us, especially going into conference play next weekend," Coach Voltz said.

Tonight improves the Majors to 5-1, as they will look to use the positive momentum for a series of upcoming weekend games against Birmingham Southern and Emory.

The weekend starts with a 12 pm start against Birmingham Southern at Harper Davis Field on Saturday, Sept. 26th
