Box Score Birmingham, AL – After a tough opening day loss earlier this week, the Millsaps men's soccer team rebounded by defeating Louisiana College in Birmingham, Alabama.
On a neutral field, the Majors controlled the game from start to finish to achieve a convincing 5-0 win over the Wildcats of Louisiana College.
The Majors started the game with a great deal of momentum as they outshot the Wildcats 16-2 in the first half of play. However, despite the high shot totals, the Majors only led 1-0 at halftime on a Lukas Elmhammar goal (Nico Roth assist).
Millsaps head soccer coach, Steve Voltz, wanted to see his team take better advantage of the first half scoring opportunities.
"After expending a great deal of energy and emotion in a tough loss earlier this week, we came out flat in the first half today," Coach Voltz said. "To compete at a high level we have to show our experience and leadership to play well from start to finish."
The second half proved to be better for the Majors as they came out more focused and determined to put the game away quickly.
Senior forward, Nico Roth started the half on a positive note for the Majors by scoring two quick goals (three total on the year). From there the Majors never looked back as they finished the day with four different players scoring a total of five goals.
Nico Roth was the game's leader in scoring with two goals as Lukas Elmhammar, Tyler Cook, and Ryan Skelly scored their first goals of the season.
The second half effort helped the Majors earn their first win of the season and their first victory on the road. It also allowed for some younger players to gain valuable experience, as everyone on the team was able to play in today's game.
Defensively, the Majors only allowed two shots against the Wildcats, who fought hard the entire game and never quit.
Overall, it was a good day for Millsaps men's soccer as they were able to rebound after a tough, emotional loss earlier in the week.
"I'm proud of the way our guys rebounded by coming out more focused at half time," Coach Voltz said. "I'm also proud of the defensive effort tonight in only allowing two shots and no goals, it gives us great momentum moving forward from here."
Next up for the Majors is another game in Birmingham, AL against Wilmington College (of Ohio) this Sunday, Sept. 6th at 11 am.
