JACKSON, Miss – The Millsaps baseball team (7-21, 5-13 SAA) was downed by Hendrix College (9-18, 6-12 SAA) in both games of a doubleheader at Twenty Field on Saturday, 14-4 and 14-7 in seven innings each.
Game One: 4-14 (7 innings)
Jon Dale Dieckman (three hits, one RBI) and
Keaton Page (two hits, one RBI) were the most prolific batters for the Majors in Game One.
Case Page and
Alan Merkle both added RBIs for Millsaps. In total, Hendrix posted 18 hits compared to 13 by Millsaps.
The Warriors got on the scoreboard first with a walk with the bases loaded in the top of the second. They added two more runs in the inning for a 3-0 lead.
The Majors retaliated in the bottom of the second inning starting with RBI singles to left field from
Keaton Page and
Alan Merkle cut the deficit to 3-2.
After a scoreless inning from both teams in the third, the Warriors knocked in two more runs with an RBI single to right field in the top of the fourth to raise their advantage to 5-2.
Trying to put the game out of reach, Hendrix plated six runners in the top of the fifth inning for an 11-2 advantage.
Dieckman tallied an RBI single to left field that raced home pinch runner
Bailey Watkins to make the score 11-3.
After scoring one run in the top of the sixth, a two-run homerun for Hendrix then put the foes up double digits at 14-3.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, an RBI single from Page scored junior infielder
Nathan Chilton for the final tally of the game.
Game Two (Seven Innings): 7-14 (7 innings)
Chilton scored two runs, added a hit, an RBI and a stolen base to lead Millsaps on the scoresheet in Game Two.
Sophomore pitcher
Wil Wood accumulated six strikeouts in four innings pitched, but allowed seven runs on nine hits in 4.0 innings of work.
Hendrix batted in two runners in the top of the first. The Warriors then added three runs in the top of the third and two more tallies in the top of the fourth to burst out to a 7-0 lead.
Seven more runs were rattled in the fifth and sixth innings combined for a 14-0 advantage.
A two-RBI sacrifice fly to left field from
Will Neely scored Pitre and Chilton to get Millsaps on the board. When
Jacob Dickinson put the ball in play for Millsaps later in the inning, an error from the Warriors' first baseman allowed
Mason Little to score.
Down 14-3 headed into the bottom of the seventh inning, Chilton started a seventh-inning rally with an RBI single that scored Merkle.
Dylan McFarland also scored on the same play off a Hendrix throwing error.
Chilton was rewarded with his RBI, scoring from third off a
Bailey Lupo fielder's choice for the third score of the inning.
Jackson Ware added another run to cut the deficit to 14-7, but the Majors would not score after that.
