Centre Hampers Football in Homecoming Game, 59-20

Freshman Gray Jennings Threw for 295 Yards, Three Touchdowns in Defeat

JACKSON, Miss. The Millsaps football team was bested by the Centre Colonels with the help of special teams during Homecoming, 59-20 on Saturday at the Harper Davis Field.

Rising freshman quarterback Gray Jennings threw for 295 yards (19-of-33) and three touchdowns.

Senior wideout Temias Mason hauled in six receptions for 93 yards, including a long of 48 yards. Junior Connor Ladner (53 yards, 3 receptions) and freshman Damon Lee (51 yards, two receptions) both eclipsed 50 receiving yards as well.

Sophomore Joshua Richardson recorded 87 all-purpose yards (71 yards rushing, 17 yards receiving) with a receiving score. Senior D.B. Bennett and freshman Liam Cohen each added a receiving touchdown as well. Classmate Tae Hills accumulated five kickoff returns for 102 yards.

Rising freshman James Jones led the defense with eight tackles, while Nehemiah Coalson, Darren Labit, Brian Shaw and Tondarrius Stallion all recorded five tackles. Sophomore Braylon Willis added a sack.

Centre scored on their first possession and added a field goal in the opening minutes of the second quarter. Millsaps would march down the field prior to the field goal, but a fumble stopped the opportunity at the Colonel 25-yard line.

Trailing 17-0, the Majors would respond when Jennings found Richardson wide open on the left side of the field for a 17-yard touchdown midway through the second quarter.

The Colonels would add another score before halftime after a poor snap on a Millsaps punt led to strong field position.

Looking to make a comeback in the third quarter, freshman Luke Bridges forced a Centre fumble which was recovered by classmate Michael Battle. Jennings then drove the Majors 90 yards down the field with eight plays, finishing the drive with a 14-yard touchdown completion to Bennett to cut the deficit to 24-14.

Centre scored the next three touchdowns before Jennings would find Cohen on a three-yard pass, making it a 45-20 contest after a missed extra-point attempt. The Colonels added two late touchdowns for the final 59-20 tally.

The Majors will be back on the road to face Trinity in San Antonio, Texas next Saturday, beginning at 12 p.m. Live video and live stats will be available at gomajors.com.
