Majors Tally Eight Student-Athletes on CSC Academic All-District® Track & Field/Cross Country Teams

Natalie Burke, Fran Edwards, Patch Heard, Clare Howard, Landry Lemoine, Angelle Martin, Bryan Sullivan, Rose Ward Earned Distinction

AUSTIN, Texas – Millsaps combined for eight student-athletes who made the grade in the classroom and in competition to land on the 2022-23 CSC Academic All-District® Track & Field/Cross Country Teams, the College Sports Communicators announced on Wednesday.
 
Patch Heard, Landry Lemoine and Bryan Sullivan made the men's team, while Natalie Burke, Fran Edwards, Clare Howard, Angelle Martin and Rose Ward garnered the honor on the women's side.
 
The 2022-23 Academic All-District® Track & Field/Cross Country Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their atheletic pursuits and in excellence in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes student-athletes in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA. A combination of a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA and significant athletic accomplishments were needed to be nominated by CSC members.
 
Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second and third-team Academic All- America® honorees will be announced June 28 (women) and June 29 (men).
 
Heard, an Applied Math major from Ocean Springs, Miss., owns a 3.881 GPA. The sophomore became the third-fastest runner in program history in the 800 meters with a time of 1 minute, 59.70 seconds. Heard scored in seventh place in the event at the 2023 SAA Championships.
 
He also helped the 4x400m relay score in sixth position. Last season he posted a personal-best open 400-meter time of 53.02 seconds, while also competing in cross country both seasons with Millsaps.
Heard has been named to the SAA Academic Honor Roll three times for cross country and track and field thus far. He also was a Chemistry Award recipient in 2022 and is conducting a summer math research project.
 
Another coastal Mississippi native, Lemoine obtained his degree in Business Administration with a 3.69 GPA. Hailing from Bay St. Louis, Lemoine set the school 3K record (9:18.55) and 5K record (15:46.21) in 2021.
 
He ran the second-quickest 1500m (4:10.64) and second-fastest 10K (33:25.57) in 2021 as well. Lemoine has scored in the 4x400, 5K and 10K at the league meet. He also competed in the 2019 South/Southeast Region Cross Country Championships.

Lemoine was named to the SAA Academic Honor Roll multiple times for cross country and track and field and now plans on pursuing an MBA at Millsaps.

A member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Student Body Association and a Presidential Ambassador, he also served as a real estate agent for HL Raymond Properties during his time away from Millsaps during the summer. In that time, he developed strong relationships with clients and advocated for them during sales negotiations, including over $1 million in sales during the period.

Sullivan achieved remarkable success in two seasons with the Millsaps swimming and diving program before joining the track and field team in 2023. He obtained his undergraduate degree in Neuroscience with a 3.875 GPA and currently possesses a 4.0 GPA in pursuit of his MBA.

The Jackson, Miss., product scored at the conference meet in the javelin. He finished seventh with a toss of 40.45 meters. He also set times of 12.12 seconds in the 100m and 25.25 seconds in the 200m.
His numerous awards in the pool included being a two-time SAA Men's Swimmer of the Year, both an NCAA First Team and Honorable Mention All-American, 2022 CSCAA Scholar All-American, SAA Men's Swimming Newcomer of the Year and several other plaudits.

He set six SAA open records, three SAA meet records, holds nine individual school marks and was a member of four program relay top times.

The Jackson Prep graduate was named to Club 40 for a 4.0 GPA twice thus far and is a member of the SAA Academic Honor Roll. He also was a head swim coach for Reservoir Gators.

Burke, a sophomore Business major from Vicksburg, Miss., has accumulated a 3.937 GPA. In two seasons, she has etched her name in the school's track and field record books. Burke set the triple jump school record at 2023 SAA meet with bound of 10.76 meters. She also has second-best program leap in the long jump (5.22 meters) as well as being the third-fastest runner in 100m (12.77 seconds) and fourth-swiftest Major in 200m (26.58 seconds).
Burke was named All-SAA Third Team in the triple jump after placing third at the conference meet and impressively scored in all five events she competed in during the meet (triple jump, long jump, 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay).
A member of SAA Academic Honor Roll and twice a part of Club 40 for perfect 4.0 semesters, she received the Ronald Reagan Leadership Award, George Eastman Leadership Award, Service Awards and was involved as a Hugh O'Brian Leadership Delegate, the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta.
Additionally, Burke was a Sunday school teacher at Crossway Church and was in the Vicksburg Cotillion Service Club and Sub Debutant Club.

Edwards, a sophomore pursuing a degree in Government and Politics, became the sixth-fastest runner in program history in the 10K while competing at the 2023 SAA Championships (44:17.97, 10th). She also set a 5K track personal best at same meet (20:27.28, 14th).
Her 3.947 cumulative GPA has enabled her to make the SAA Academic Honor three times for cross country and track and field. She was a member of Club 40 with a perfect 4.0 GPA semester following the Fall 2022 semester.
The Little Rock, Ark., native is in the Student Body Association, involved with the Purple and White Newspaper, an Executive Director of Programming elect, a Writing Center consultant and Pathways Leader. Her work has been featured in the Promenade and she worked in the City of Meridian Cultural Affairs Office.

Howard, recently earned her degree in Biology with a perfect 4.0 GPA. The Millsaps Valedictorian was one of only four students to receive the college's Founder's Medal and was a recipient of the 2023 Frank and Rachel Laney Award for her essay, "How a Pope Led Me to Millsaps."

Hailing from Anchorage, Alaska, she became the program's third-fastest 10K runner (42:28.44) and fifth-fastest 5K runner (19:44.24, 10th) in school history at the 2023 SAA Championships. Howard finished seventh to score in the 10K.

Additionally in 2022, she became the fourth-fastest runner in program history at 800m (2:28.67) and placed seventh to score in last season's league meet. She also finished 25th at the 2022 SAA Cross Country Championships (25:35.2) and competed in the ensuing NCAA Division III South Region Cross Country Championships.

A seven-time member on the SAA Academic Honor Roll was a Ford Fellow, Presidential Ambassador, Summer Orientation Leader, Foundations Leader, Pathways Peer, International Buddy, CASE Fellow, Writing Center Consultant, Academic Excellence Chairwoman for Phi Mu and involved with the Millsaps Jewish Cultural Organization.

Martin secured her Biology degree with a 3.509 GPA. The Lakeland, La., student-athlete placed 20th at the 2022 SAA Cross Country Championships and was the best-placer for Millsaps (42nd) at the 2022 South Region Championships with a 6K time of 25:33.1. She also set a 5K cross country best of 21:16.0.
Named to the SAA Academic Honor Roll on multiple occasions for cross country as well as track and field, she was the Phi Mu Philanthropy Chairwoman and plans to attend Medical School. She also made the Dean's List and was a Lifeguard for SELA Aquatics.

Ward, earned two degrees in Mathematics and Psychology with a 3.965 GPA. She owns the program's second-fastest time in the 5K at 18:57.30 and is the third-longest hammer thrower at 41.76 meters.

At the conference meet, she scored three times in the hammer throw and once in both the 5K and 4-400m relay. The Brandon, Miss., product also placed 17th at the 2021 SAA Cross Country Championships.

A multiple member of the SAA Academic Honor Roll was inducted into Psi Chi Psychology Honorary in 2021 and into Pi Mu Epsilon Mathematics Honorary in 2020. She received the Robert A. Shive Jr. Freshman Mathematics Award in 2019 and was twice named to Club 40 for a perfect 4.0 semester.

She also obtained honors in chemistry, while some of her research included "Investigating Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons as Biosignatures in the Martian Subsurface using GC-MS" with research advisors Dr. Timothy Ward, the Millsaps College Athletics Faculty Athletics Representative, and Dr. Ardith Bravenec.
