Graduates AJ Alvarez, Tyler Hamby Strive with Exemplary Character throughout Spring Season

CANTON, Ga. – A pair of Millsaps men's and women's track and field student-athletes were named to the 2025 Southern Athletic Assocation Outdoor Track & Field All-Sportsmanship Team. Graduates AJ Alvarez and Tyler Hamby were chosen by the Millsaps coaching staff and their recognition was announced by the SAA office on Monday.

Formed in 2011, the SAA places a special emphasis on good sportsmanship and fair play amongst all competitors.

Alvarez appeared in five meets during the 2025 track and field outdoor season.

On March 14, he finished eleventh in the hammer throw, where he threw 28.24 meters at the Rhodes Invitational.

Improving on his talent, Alvarez extended his hammer throw distance to 32.53 meters on April 12, where he was the twelfth-place contender at the Rhodes 7-Way Meet.

Additionally, he notched one throw during the season in the discus (22.17 meters) at the Belhaven Invitational on March 22.

He also competed extensively with four throwing competitions in the shot put as a senior, recording his best toss at the 2025 SAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. His toss of 10.10 meters was good for 17th position.

Working hard as a throwing specialist, Alvarez also completed his undergraduate studies with a 3.63 cumulative GPA and obtained his bachelor's degree in biology during the 2025 Millsaps College Spring Commencement.

While on campus, he was a student assistant coach for the Millsaps football team in the fall and was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and Phi Beta Sigma Honor Society. Alvarez made the SAA Fall Academic Honor Roll all three seasons as a student-athlete for football and topped it off with a spot on the SAA Spring Academic Honor Roll his sole season with track and field.

Maintaining his focus outside of track and field, Alvarez devoted time to internships with Gretna Nutrition and HWY 23 Nutrition.

Hamby, also a member of the Millsaps women's cross country team, added her name to the 2025 SAA Outdoor Track & Field All-Sportsmanship Team after showing a positive attitude towards her teammates and other competitors.

During the 2025 outdoor track & field season, Hamby appeared in three meets after overcoming an injury. The Courtland, Miss., native and javelin thrower finished runner-up at both the Rhodes 7-Way Meet (31.09 meters) on April 12 and at the Mississippi College Spring Classic (31.43 meters) on March 1.

Inside the classroom, Hamby garnered a 3.21 cumulative GPA and completed her bachelor's degree in biology. She was also recognized during the 2025 Millsaps College Spring Commencement.

In the Fall of 2024, she became a member of Club 40 after boasting an impressive 4.0 GPA in her academic studies.

Hamby is a two-time member of the SAA Fall Academic Honor Roll for cross country and has made the President's and Dean's List.

While on campus, Hamby was a member of the Tri-Beta Honor Society and did research looking for endangered species of salamanders at Tishomingo State Park.

Hamby also helped manage Snowden Grove Baseball Park in Southaven, Miss., and was an assistant vet tech at South Panola Vet Hospital. After graduation she plans to attend graduate school to study veterinary medicine.
