Volleyball Takes Three Wins Home from Huntingdon Tournament

Majors Best LaGrange, Piedmont, Hosts over the Weekend

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Millsaps College volleyball team bested a trio of foes and only were bested once in five sets in the Huntingdon Volleyball Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

Match 1: St. Thomas (TX) 3, Millsaps 2
(16-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-13, 13-15)

Millsaps mounted a significant comeback in the fourth set to force a decisive fifth set in the first match on Friday. However, the Celts secured the win with a strong finish in the fifth set, outlasting Millsaps in a tense final frame.

Sophomore Zoë LaCaze recorded a career-high 11 kills and eight digs. The Prairieville, La., native also registered three assists, a solo blocked shot, and a block assist.

Senior Ally Baer contested 13 kills, one assist, two digs, and three service aces. Junior Sandy Bourgeois led the Majors in digs with 26 while recording one assist.

Sophomore Abigail Drury finished the matchup with one kill, four assists, and a block assist while setting the tone with six digs.

Freshman Rachel Zamjahn led the Majors with a double-double with 33 assists and 17 digs while adding three kills of the day.

Senior Trista Naquin recorded four kills and four digs.

Senior Mallory Richardson held the court down with both eight kills and eight digs. Freshman Madelynn Sasser finished with five kills and two digs. 

The opening set saw Millsaps overcome an early deficit with a 3-0 run, beginning with a kill from Naquin assisted by Zamjahn, followed by key errors from the opposition. 

Despite the efforts of Baer and Richardson, who both contributed with kills, the Celts capitalized on several attack errors to open a commanding lead. 

Millsaps made a late surge with contributions from both Zamjahn and Naquin, but St. Thomas (TX) secured the first set 25-16.

Millsaps began the second set with a quick strike as Sasser, assisted by LaCaze, recorded the first point with a kill.

The set remained tightly contested with several lead changes, highlighted by a decisive mid-set service ace from Zamjahn that tied the score at 7-7. 

As the set approached its conclusion, Millsaps secured a 25-23 victory, propelled by Richardson's consistent offensive contributions and the final point delivered by Sasser from a Zamjahn assist.

The third set began with a commanding 5-0 run from the Celts, capitalizing on early errors from Millsaps. Naquin sparked a response with a kill at 5-1, followed by two consecutive kills from LaCaze to narrow the gap.

Despite Millsaps' efforts, including a late push with a service ace from Baer and a kill by Richardson, St. Thomas (TX) maintained their lead to take the set 25-19.

Key contributions from Zamjahn's setting facilitated several scoring opportunities, but ultimately, the home team secured the set.

Millsaps opened the fourth set with a strong start, as LaCaze capitalized on a setup from Zamjahn to secure the first point.

Despite an early 5-1 deficit, Millsaps responded with precision, highlighted by a pivotal service ace from Baer that tied the score at 7-7. 

The team then surged ahead with a sequence of points, including a service ace from senior Olivia Danos (service ace, seven digs) and multiple errors from the Celts.

Widening the gap to 16-10. Millsaps maintained control, with Naquin and Baer contributing critical kills, ultimately closing the set with a decisive 25-13 victory.

The fifth set began with Millsaps capitalizing on early scoring opportunities, with LaCaze and Baer each recording kills to help establish a 4-1 lead. 

However, the Celts responded with a series of points, taking advantage of a few errors from Millsaps to shift the momentum and build an 8-6 advantage.

Following a strong efforts from Baer, who led with multiple kills, and a strategic setting by Zamjahn, Millsaps fell short in the final stretch, concluding the set with a narrow 15-13 loss.

Match 2: Millsaps 3, LaGrange 0
(25-20, 25-17, 25-22)

Millsaps dominated the serving game with eight aces, securing a straight-set victory on Friday.

Zamjahn helped the Majors sweep the Panthers in three sets on Friday. The Haran, La., native recorded 29 assists, six digs, five kills, and two service aces.

Classmate Tatum Husby accumulated 12 kills and four digs, Danos fought hard with 13 digs, one service ace, and one kill.

Naquin erupted with seven kills, one assist, a block assist, and two digs. Bourgeois saw 15 digs, three service aces, and three assists.

Freshman Laila Fredieu registered two assists and 11 digs to down the Panthers while Baer recorded eight kills, one blocked shot, and two digs. 

Richardson contested seven attacks and three digs while LaCaze contested one kill, two service ace and three digs.

In the first set of the match between Millsaps and LaGrange, Millsaps gained an early advantage with a kill by Naquin at 1-0.

LaGrange briefly tied the score, but Millsaps surged ahead with a service ace by Sandy Bourgeois at 3-2 and a series of attack errors by LaGrange. 

Millsaps maintained their lead with effective plays, including a kill by Baer that increased the score to 10-3. Although the Panthers attempted a comeback with kills by Jasmine Gross.

Millsaps continued to capitalize on their opponent's errors and expanded their lead. A service ace by Bourgeois put the score at 23-19, and Millsaps secured the set 25-20 with a final kill by Husby.

Millsaps secured a 25-17 victory in the second set against LaGrange, highlighted by a strong offensive performance. After a balanced start with the teams were tied at 5-5.

Millsaps pulled ahead with a series of scoring plays, including a crucial service ace by Zamjahn, which placed them at a 13-10 advantage. 

Richardson was instrumental in maintaining Millsaps' momentum, contributing multiple kills, with a decisive one at 25-17 to close the set. 

Despite LaGrange's attempts to rally, including a late service ace, Millsaps' consistent play and strategic setting by Zamjahn ensured their lead remained unchallenged.

The third set of the match saw a tightly contested start, with both teams trading points until a 4-4 tie. Millsaps then gained momentum with a 3-0 run, highlighted by a service ace from Olivia Danos.

Pushing their lead to 13-10. The Panthers attempted to close the gap, narrowing Millsaps' lead to 18-16, but Millsaps continued to press forward. 

With strong performances from Naquin and Husby, Millsaps extended their advantage to 22-18.

Match 4: Millsaps 3, Huntingdon 1
(23-25, 25-14, 25-16, 25-17)

Millsaps defeated Huntingdon College, 3-1 on Saturday in the final match of the weekend. After dropping the first set 25-23, the Majors rallied to win the next three sets 25-14, 25-16, and 25-17.

They recorded 50 kills and six service aces, while the Hawks managed 33 kills and three aces. Millsaps' defensive effort included 80 digs, contributing to their decisive comeback victory.

Baer led Millsaps' offense with 10 kills and contributed with three blocks, totaling 15.5 points. Sandy Bourgeois was pivotal in defense, recording 21 digs over the stretch. Zamjahn facilitated the team's play by amassing 40 assists while adding a block and 11 digs.

Naquin displayed efficiency by hitting a .615 attack percentage with eight kills and adding two blocks to her performance.

The match opened with a balanced exchange of points, as Millsaps capitalized on an early attack error by Huntingdon's Kinsley Martin, taking the initial lead. Trista Naquin and Mallory Richardson contributed vital kills, both assisted by Rachel Zamjahn, who demonstrated her playmaking ability with multiple assists.

Despite a resilient performance from the Majors, including key scoring efforts by Ally Baer, who tallied multiple kills, Huntingdon edged out the set with a narrow 25-23 victory, punctuated by a service ace from Martin.

Starting the second set with momentum, Millsaps surged to an early 3-0 lead, highlighted by a kill from Naquin and consecutive plays from Zamjahn. Junior Amelia Bohl's offensive presence was notable with multiple kills, contributing significantly to Millsaps' advantage.

Despite a brief rally from the Hawks, key blocks by Baer and a series of attack errors from the opposition helped the Majors maintain control, culminating in a decisive 25-14 set victory.

The third set opened with Millsaps taking an early lead, highlighted by Bohl's kill from Zamjahn's assist. The Majors continued to capitalize on Huntingdon's errors, with Baer and Tatum Husby making key contributions to extend the lead.

As the set progressed, Madelynn Sasser emerged as a pivotal player, scoring multiple kills, including a decisive one at 21-16. Millsaps maintained momentum, with Olivia Danos sealing the set with a service ace, finishing at 25-16.

Millsaps opened the fourth set with a strong start, securing a 3-0 lead with a service ace by Danos and consecutive kills from Zamjahn and Husby. Zamjahn continued to be instrumental throughout the set, amassing multiple assists and guiding Millsaps to a 25-17 victory.

The Majors capitalized on Huntingdon's errors, including a pivotal attack error by Morgan Suggs on the final point, to close out the set decisively.

Looking ahead, the Majors will travel to face Tougaloo College on Monday. The matchup is set for 6 p.m. in Tougaloo, Miss., marking an opportunity for Millsaps to continue their season on the road, with live video and live stats available at gomajors.com.
